Yoladybug Posted April 21, 2004 Posted April 21, 2004 So this obviously isn't a dog question, but how are these people allowed to sell mountian lions, black bears, and Siberian tigers online?!?! Check this site out...it's crazy! http://www.gotpetsonline.com/cgi-bin/Eware/view_ads.cgi I was just curious if anyone has ever seen anything like this. I guess you really can buy anything and everything online. Quote
courtnek Posted April 21, 2004 Posted April 21, 2004 OH MY!!! sorry, couldnt resist..truth is, most places you cant buy "exotic" pets without a wild animals license...these would all fit that category. If they are found to be selling to people without the licenses, they could be in deep doo doo...so there must be a loophole. disgusting.     Quote
Guest Mutts4Me Posted April 21, 2004 Posted April 21, 2004 There are only 19 states where having exotic pets like that is illegal. The rest of the states consider it a county issue. I don't know anything about selling, buying, or trading pets online, but I know that there are plenty of places where it's perfectly legal to sell a little of tiger cubs out of your backyard. Or a gas station. No joke, one of our cats came froma couple who got him when they saw a sign at a gas station, "tiger cubs for sale." You'd think it'd be common sense for someone to NOT get a lion, tiger, or bear as a pet, but I'll tell you that it obviously isn't. Obviously, because there are sanctuaries all across the country that take in such animals that people thought they could keep but couldn't. We've got 118 here, and in a couple weeks we're getting in a new Serval, making it 119. Almost all were rescued from private breeders or were surrendered by private owners because they'd suddenly become insanely powerful. We have a black leopard named Vada who was purchased as a cub as a pet by a guy who thought it'd be cool to have a "black panther." He wrestled with him until Vada reached maturity and started fighting back. You know what the guy did? He took out Vada's teeth. We're not sure if he used pliers or a file, but the poor cat came to us in horrible pain and emaciated because he couldn't eat. A dentist was nice enough to make Vada a new set of silver teeth, so he was able to heal and eat. It's truly disgusting the number of cats we have who came from people who thought they could have one as a pet. We usually get them between 1-3 years old, because that's when they start becoming "a problem." It's not much diffierent than the dog situation, really. Lots of people get dogs without doing the right research and making the proper commitments. They ought to know better. But when it comes to Lions, Tigers, Bears, and Cougars, people really, really ought to know better. Just ask any of the cats who are now doomed to live their lives in small concrete cages. They're kept clean and fed, they're loved and respected, and it's better than the euthanizia ther would otherwise face, but they shouldn't have to be there in the first place. Beach Posted April 21, 2004 Posted April 21, 2004 I think it should be illegal - period. These animals should be in the wild and not kept in cages. Circus shouldn't be allowed to have them either. Wasn't it last year when they found a Tiger in a department in New York? Cats and dogs are already breed to be dependent on us and want to be with us. Isn't that enough? Quote
Beach Posted April 21, 2004 Posted April 21, 2004 By the way. Have and keep the rescue places of course but do not allow any selling or buying of exotic animals anymore. I think that would be the best and the right thing to do for all countries. Quote
izzy Posted April 22, 2004 Posted April 22, 2004 They belong to their habitats, it's sad look a cougar with a chain on his neck, it doesn't matter if it was sold by internet, they simply don't have to be sold  That site really sucks  Quote
bk_blue Posted April 22, 2004 Posted April 22, 2004 Those pics are really cute... but I think it's sad... those animals should be left in the wild. Quote
kendalyn Posted April 22, 2004 Posted April 22, 2004 It should be illegal to own those large cats. I can't think of one reason why anybody should own one as a pet. My Grandma used to have a skunk as a pet though. She loved that skunk to death. He was really sweet too. They do require a lot of attention though. Quote
