imported_nea Posted December 27, 2003 Posted December 27, 2003 I'm exhausted now, this has been a horrible day! But Webby is allright and thats all that matters. He can be such a lovealbe little pain. Yesterday he stole a turkey bone. By the time we noticed it he'd allready eaten some of it. He acted fine, we went to bed. At 6 or so this morning he woke me by licking my face, like he usually does. I was tired and tried to go back to sleep. He whined, but not like he does when he urgently needs to go outside. So I didn't pay attention. Then this awful stench filled the room. :-? So I put him in his crate and cleaned up the yucky mess. I went outside to throw the three (!!!) black plastic bags away, he followed. Pretty normal, he's a puppy he has accidents. We went back to sleep. Then I awoke again to a gagging sound and sure enough, he'd thrown up. On my bed. I got scared and woke my mom up. He kept whining and looking unhappy. My mom examined the... stuff that he'd so nicely deposited on my clean sheets and found a huge piece of bone, along with huge amounts of grass he'd eaten outside. She called the vet. By that time I was terrified, and he was acting strange. He was lying down and didn't react by jumping up joyfully when someone else came, like he usually does. So while she was on the phone I sat there with him and I really really realized how much he means to me. It almost takes something to scare you to understand how much you love something. The vet said that he shouln't eat anything and should drink lots. She said that they could take X-rays to see if there were any bone pieces to big for him to get out but we should wait a while to see how he was before taking him in. He did start acting better, luckily. He had to go out often but seemed better after each time (he has diahreea (sp?)) We called the vet back at about 10 and she told us to give him rice broth. He does not like it! But he drank it and then later he got it mixed with rice and some tuna fish to make it more appetizing. But he started acting more like his jaunty self. And he has throught the day seemed to get better, although he doesnt seem to have much contoll over his bladder. Its been lots of in-and-outs today. So he's learned "on the rug" better, which I guess is a good thing thats come out of this. Hes such a poor puppy. No food! All day long! Except for some rice... Which is not something this puppy if fond of. And he must be so uncomfortable too. He HAS to learn not to jump up and steal things from the counter! Maybe the spray bottle might have to be used even. He is allright now, but its going to be a loooong night. How long will it take him to get all the bone out? But as long as hes ok everythings ok, I've learned that today. Quote
courtnek Posted December 27, 2003 Posted December 27, 2003 keep a CLOSE eye on him for the next few days...bone fragments can be nasty, and if big enough can tear the intestinal track....he seems ot be getting better so he's probably allright, but watch him anyway... as far as the counters. put up some mousetraps under a blanket, close to the edge and also about midway. when they "snap" when the dog jumps up, in most cases it will frighten him off the counters. Put something up there he really likes that he shouldnt have. Keep this up for a few days. the mousetraps should teach him that the counters are OFF LIMITS.... however, be aware it doesnt work with all dogs. If it doesnt, you have to make a concerted effort to never leave anything up there he could steal... :D Quote
StarFox Posted December 28, 2003 Posted December 28, 2003 He isn't pooping blood or anything right? I know zebra was pooping blood after we gave him some turkey (no bones) and we gave him white rice and baby food. he was ok but the turkey had irritated his GI tract. And Zebra was a counter surfer too, but we quickly solved that problem. We put 2 baking sheets (like the kind you use for cookies or muffins) haphazardly on the table and put a treat just far enought away so he would put his paws on the table to get it. Thust causing the pans to fall. It scared the beans out of him and he hasn't done it since. Quote
DogPaddle Posted December 28, 2003 Posted December 28, 2003 :( They get themselves into such trouble sometimes. Zaphod is a counter surfer and has recently learned how to open the garbage can lid - time for some creative training I guess. Good luck to both of us  Quote
courtnek Posted December 28, 2003 Posted December 28, 2003 You could get one of the trash cans with the locking lid...the metal wire thing that slides over a slot on the top. I've never seen a dog be able to figure one of those out yet. Quote

Clever cookie! Now we keep all our trashcans inside a closet or blocked off by a baby gate, spray it with bitterapple, and im trying to teach her the garbage can is OFF LIMITS! Quote

I don't think the trash would make it into the bin very often. I got some bitter apple like stuff from my mom for Xmas, she knows me so well. I try that and see how we do. Quote
bk_blue Posted December 29, 2003 Posted December 29, 2003 DP- Would a pedal bin work? ie. a large one? Or is that what you already have and is not working? :D Quote
imported_Kat Posted December 29, 2003 Posted December 29, 2003 erf poor wee Webby. Just as the others say keep a close eye on him and look out for lethargy, bloating, guarding his abdomen or persistent diarrhoea or constipation. As far as fluids goes, give him small quantities of water little and often but whatever you do, don't let him gorge himself continuously drinking huge bowls of water. Quote
imported_Leanne Posted December 29, 2003 Posted December 29, 2003 orrrr poor webby :( hope he gets all those bones out!! Quote
imported_nea Posted December 30, 2003 Author Posted December 30, 2003 He's fine now! :D He seems perfectly ok, but we're keeping an eye on him just incase. I'm going to try that with the cookie sheets. He gets terrified by noises like that so it should work. He hates the gate things we have because once when he was a tiny puppy he knocked one over and since then he stays clear of them. Hopefully he'll do the same with counters! I think the mouse traps would work well for him too but I don't like having mouse traps at home because I have pet mice... It jsut seems wrong somehow. DogPaddle, good luck with Zaphod! :) Quote
