Hi:
I am planning to buy a chihuahua, and have read quite a bit of info online about them. I see that there are two types (although I realize this only refers to looks, not an actual classification). I have seen them described as apple heads, and deer heads. My question is, does any one have photos to show me the difference between the two types? I would really appreciate it. I would like to know what I am looking at, when I go look at them, without having to rely solely on what the breeder says :)
Thanks!!

I dont have a pic but i can tell you what i have found. the apple heads are smaller in size and usually have a big head. the deer head are a taller and thin dog typically having a smaller head. think of a really really small whippet, they are really skinny all over like that with the little head.
be fore warned if your talking apple head chihuahua your looking at 800 for pet quality and well over a thousand for the pick.

Why don't you visit the website for the Chihuahua Club of America? http://www.chihuahuaclubofamerica.com/ You can read the standard (heads should be apple, not deer) and learn a lot about the breed. They may even have breeder references on there. Don't know for sure, I'm not into Chi's.

Thank you , again. I am really looking for a photo, because I have read the descriptions, and just can't get a mental picture. It has been easy finding the apple-head, but the deer head has proven to be harder, or maybe I just don't know the difference :)

I suspect that it's been easier to find the apple heads because that's what responsible breeders strive for. BYBers and puppymillers are really the ones who produce the deer heads.

If, for whatever reason, you decide you really want a deer head you really need to check into the health testing, structure, temperament and pedigrees on the sire and dam. No, not all apple head producers are responsible breeders but you have better odds with one of them.

Hi:
First let me say thanks to everyone who has been nice enought to reply.
That said, now that I have been told that deer type may have health problems due to poor breeding, I feel like it is even more important to know the difference. Still, if anyone has a photo (or a link) of the deer type I would really like to see it, so that I know what not to look for :) I don't want to be fooled by a breeder due to my ignorance.
Thanks again!!

Which type of Chihuahua will you be getting? A long-hair chi or a short-hair? We have the Long-Hair type. If you want to see a few more, stop by Cutefamilypets.com and click on Breed Gallery -- I have a few of my member's chihuahuas displayed on there.

I can tell you they are absolutely wonderful little bets. Read about Buffy, she belongs to my daughter (weighs 3 pounds 2 ounces, 2 years old) at the page labeled "About Us." All I know is that to own a Chihuahua is to fall in love with the breed.

Hi:
I am sure I am the only nut who was desperately seeking an answer to the apple head/ deer type question, but just in case anyone else out there is curious, I found a site w/ tons of Chi pictures. After looking throught them I now realize that the difference between the two types is very noticeable. I just scrolled throught he photos, and observed closely, and I finally saw the difference. If anyone is interested in Chihuahuas, this is a great site: http://www.ciparadise.com/index.htm
Thanks to all of you who helped me!!

PS- If you would like to view the deer-type (which by the way, looks exactly like a teeny tiny deer), please refer to the photo named Peanut (with Jacob...) on the aforementioned site.
Thanks again!
