Guest Anonymous Posted March 9, 2003 Posted March 9, 2003 I recently adopted an 8 mnth old Akita/Shepherd/? mix from a local shelter. All is going well except for the fact that his mouth gets very foamy when we play with him. He is very gentle and does not appear to be aggressive but we are worried that when we take him walkig in public (which we have not yet done) he will frighten people. Is this normal for either the Akita or Shepherd "genes" that he has? If not, might this be a warning sign of a potential problem? Quote
courtnek Posted March 9, 2003 Posted March 9, 2003 My male lab mix gets foamy after a lot of exercise, so it may be nothing. especially if you're playing with "mouth toys", like tug bars and such. They sweat through their mouths, so it may just be a cooling device, but I would have the vet check him anyway, just to be sure. Quote
mouseatthebusstop Posted March 9, 2003 Posted March 9, 2003 SO DOES THE SHAR-PEI---WE WORRIED ABOUT IT UNTILL WE WENT TO A CLUB SHOW THE OTHER PEI WERE FOAMING TOO. TAKE A LITTLE TOWEL OUT AND JUST WIPE IT AWAY :) Quote
Rowie-the-Pooh Posted March 10, 2003 Posted March 10, 2003 I'm sure your doggy pal is OK  Who cares if it will frighten people? The importance of it, is that you have your Doggy Pal and that he has you! Do what mouse said, have a little towel ready at walks, LOTS OF WATER, and maybe you should check him at the vets just to be sure  Keep us updated!! :D Quote
Prairie_Gurl Posted March 11, 2003 Posted March 11, 2003 My Lab Shadow does this every once in a while. Just like they said, it's because they're getting hot or excited. Just wipe it off w/ a towel and it'll be all right and dandy!!!!! Quote
Kaleb124 Posted March 11, 2003 Posted March 11, 2003 Kaleb foams at the mouth, but usually it is when he is waiting for a cookie! Quote
