Hi there,
My 13 week old Dobermann pup has taken to eating stones. Has anyone come across this before and if so, please help!!!!! How do I get him out of it and why does he do it? Its not very nice when it comes out the other end (for him mainly). He eats and drinks well and all vaccinations & wormings up to date.

Hi Kiwimum
dogs eating stones is quite common I believe. My old piut bull used to eat stones, usually small pebbles but occasionally a squash ball sized rock or two as well. My vet said some dogs eat stones because they are missing some minerals in their diet, or they need help witht their digestion (kinda like chooks eating grit) and because they are just plain nuts.
I think my old pitbull was just plain nuts and that's the reason he ate them. He lived for 15 years and never had a problem with it but apparently some dogs can have complications.
Hope it helped a bit??

Our dog used to eat stones as a puppy. We had to remove all access to them for a while - not easy. It passed. Never experienced any problems but a freind had to take her dog to the vet over a paticullarly large. sharp rock it had ingested. Cost some money but the dog was fine.

My friend had a Border Collie, about... a year ago, her name was Sarah. Sarah was about 6 or 7 I believe, and since I can remember being friends with her owner, she ALWAYS played with big rocks, and ate the little ones! I thinks he played with them more then ate them, but it was such a funny site! Everyone tried EVERYTHING to try to get her to stop because her teeth were worn down, as well as her nails, and more then once she came over and dropped a big rock on my leg!! :-?
