Docking APBT's tails- Me and my friend have been arguing about whether or not to dock my pit bull's tail. I say that you don't cut off pit bull's tails and my friend says that you do.Please tell me which way is most accepted.

the most acceptable way to the canine would obviously be NOT to endure such painful MUTILATION - for no reason whatsoever...light years later, even the akc, in their infinite wisdom [right!] decided it's no longer "necessary" in order to be a "show-pup"..................miami347

you shouldnt dock its tail its meant to have a tail .it operates at best when it has a tail and anyway its your dog not your friends

the question is not what's most accepted, but what is right. a dog's tail is very important for balance. would you like to cut off an arm or leg?!?! i don't think so. so give your dog the same respect.

many clubs have problems with puppies who have a color of coat that is not "standard", or similar preferences they try to enforce over the whole breed. such as the Gordon Setter, whose standard is black w/ gold highlights, and it is extremely difficult to register puppies who are or have parents who are any other color, like red w/ gold highlights, similar to the Irish Setter, who are the ancestors of the breed.

sometimes people are very unreasonable and you just have to use your head about what you do. if i had a dog whose breed standard was docked tails, cropped ears, etc i would not do it, even if it was the breed "standard".

I have 5 pit bulls and have years of experiance wth them,i've been researching the breed forever,I love the breed.....Please don't dock the tails,it's not natural and they're not supposed to be docked.I also don't agree with the ear cropping.....

the pitbull's tail is NEVER docked. The ears, it is very popular, and I beleive even in the standard, to have cropped ears. However, you leave a pitbull's tail alone, especially for it to fit the standard. It is becoming popular to leave the APBT with his/her natural ears, too.

[/quote] Dont dock the tail!! It is painful for the dog and causes many problems if your dog is no longer a pup. Stitches may rupture after they have been removed, causing further pain. Believe me - I know, I had my rottweilers tails docked @ 10 months and $500 later, and many sleepless nights listening to them whine and bite at their "nubs" it wasnt worth it and I wich I wouldnt have done it.

Pitbulls do not have docked tails.

It doesn't matter if you want to dock it, you can't! Puppies tails are docked (if they're going to be) at 3 days of age. Any time past that? It's just cruel.

So the topic is null anyway. You won't do it because you can't do it now. There isn't a vet (well, at least one with morals and half a head on their shoulders) that would do it.

A dog's tail should never be removed. Not only do they need it for balance (as someone else has already pointed out), but they also need it to express themselves to both other dogs and humans.

I have an Aussie with a tail. I can't imagine her without it. I just love to see it wagging when I enter the room!

Pits use their tail, as others have stated, as their center of balance. The only reason you should ever dock the APBTs tail is for health reasons. Also, most APBT breeders dont even crop the ears anymore. The ears are usually cropped to make them appear tougher.
